Full article: Born on 15 April 1883, brother of Major Philip Gerald Bailey and Captain James Connor Maxwell Bailey, both were also killed in WW1 and are included in this project. A fourth brother, Major Maurice Armand Bailey MC. also served in the war but survived the conflict. He was the son of Louisa F. Bailey and the late James B. Bailey, of 11 Herne Hill Mansions. The following biographical notes on Captain Bailey are taken from Robert Coulsons Biographies of Officers of the Yorkshire Regiment and the Dulwich College Register: Educated at Dulwich College, Tom Bailey entered Clare College at Cambridge in 1902, graduating with a BA (2nd class) in 1905. His name is commemorated on the Clare College war memorial. In 1906 he became Mineralogist to the Government of Nyasaland (he jointly authored Geology of Nyasaland), Geologist to Steel Bros. & Co., Burma (1910) and Shell Oil Co., Borneo (1913). After the outbreak of the war he first joined the Yorkshire Regiment s 1st Battalion, becoming 2nd Lieutenant in April 1915. Promoted to Captain in May 1916, he was wounded the following April, but recovered and joined the 6th Battalion in March 1918. With the 6th Battalion he arrived back in Aldershot from the Western Front in June 1918. Towards the autumn the Battalion was reconstituted and allotted the task of supporting the Provisional Russian Government fighting the Bolsheviks in northern Russia. Captain Bailey and the 6th Battalion sailed from Dundee on 17 October 1918 and arrived in Murmansk, delayed due to bad weather, nine days later. Towards the end of December the Battalion was moved to Archangel where the Bolsheviks were making strong efforts to drive out the allies. The 6th Battalion fought many small actions in the early months of 1919 and on 2 April made an attack on the town of Chinova. Captain Tom Bailey was killed in this action, the last officer of the Regiment to fall in the Great War.
