Full name and title: Second Lieutenant George Henry Bowyer
| Full article: George Henry Bowyer was born on 16 August 1890 in Stratford, Essex and he was baptised in Wootton Rivers, Wiltshire on 6 October 1890. His parents were William Samuel Bowyer and Elizabeth Annie Bowyer (formerly Neale). The family lived at Marianna Villa, Stratford. The 1911 Census reveals that Henry Bowyer lived at 36 Christchurch Road, Streatham Hill with his parents, six siblings and three servants. At the time Henry was single and assisting in his father's business. George was educated at Dulwich College. In 1909 George joined the Honourable Artillery Company as a Corporal and travelled to Egypt. The Gazette on the 6th December 1916 reveals George was made a Temporary Second Lieutenant and he went on to serve with the South Wales Borderers in the 2nd Battalion as Second Lieutenant. The 2nd Battalion formed part of the 87th Brigade in the 29th Division. On the 1st July 1916 George was Killed in Action at Beaumont Hamel, France in the Battle of the Somme at the age of 26. The war dairies reported George as missing but due to the conditions stated all missing men were likely killed. There is no know grave and is remembered at Thiepval Memorial and Dulwich College Memorial. |
